5. USVI to Dominica

Leaving the USVI’s we will head 260 nautical miles southeast to the stunning coastline of Dominica. The trades should be blowing from north of east this time of year, but this is guaranteed to offer some tough upwind sailing. We will try to use the weather effects of the islands we pass enroute to our advantage and this will be a true masterclass in making way upwind. Expect a few flying fish casualties on deck during this trip!
This passage will see us spending a few nights offshore under the clear Caribbean skies. Depending on the weather conditions there is the possibility of calling into port at an island enroute, or we may cover the ground in one go. It will be a great opportunity to practice effectively sailing upwind, as well as a trip to gain experience with shipping traffic and tropical squalls. Also we keep hearing how Dominica is the most beautiful island in the Caribbean. Can’t wait for that landfall!
